The People of Kwanawa, a suburb of Sokoto, the state capital, are still in a state of shock and unbelief, The natives were recently alarmed when a certain Bello Ubandawaki, a middle-aged man and resident of the area was arrested in connection with the murder of one Alhaji Yahaya Sa’idu, a Director of Finance in Government House, Kebbi State. The incident happened on Friday, September 15, 2014, when Bello was said to have allegedly invited the deceased to a business meeting in his residence. Unknown to the late director, the suspect had conspired with others now in police custody to murder him.
The deceased, before his death, was said to have trusted Bello Ubandawaki who happens to be one of the children of the village head of the community. It was said that the deceased used his assailant as his agent whom he trusted to help him acquire some landed property within Kwanawa area.
It was further gathered that Bello was given not less than N3.5million to help purchase various plots of land, but he failed to deliver. Residents who spoke to Newsmen confirmed that the suspect was a personal agent of the late director who met his untimely death in the hands of the man he loved and trusted.
“Some of us are aware that Alhaji Saidu used to commission the suspect at different times to secure landed properties on his behalf. May be their relationship went sour when Bello failed to deliver on promise,” Malam Bashir, a resident of the area said.
Sources further revealed that frantic efforts made by the deceased to retrieve the money given to his agent (Bello) were unsuccessful. In what might have been a move for both Bello and the deceased to agree on some terms of the transaction, Bello was said to have invited his principal to a reconciliation meeting in his private residence.
Unfortunate, the victim obliged to the request, but never suspected that something untoward awaited him; he met his sad end as he was allegedly butchered to death with a jack knife.
Sources said he engaged other accomplices including a certain Musbau Musa also known as Shagon Dankikiya, Yunusa Ibrahim, and Aliyu Sani. The suspects were said to be touts in the community.
In a move to cover-up their devilish action, the suspects allegedly dug a hole in a room in the prime suspect’s house and interred the body of the victim before the police knew about the incident few days later.
Police spokesperson, El-Mustapha Sani, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who confirmed the incident, said they got the report of the murder on September 18, 2014, and quickly moved to arrest the suspects on September 19, 2014.
El-Mustapha said the police swung into action after getting the complaint from the late director’s wife that her husband had not been seen for three days. He said in the course of investigation, Bello who was considered a prime suspect was invited for interrogation.
His words: “Police swung into action and went to Bello Ubandawaki’s house, and discovered a newly- dug hole in his bedroom, freshly cemented. We dug into it and found the decomposing body of the late director and then exhumed it.
“Investigating further, we also arrested two women namely: Luba Salihu who is said to be a friend to the deceased and Fatima Shehu, the wife of the principal suspect, Bello Ubandawaki.”
He maintained that all the suspects arrested in connection with the incident had since confessed to the crime. He, however, said that investigation into the case was still ongoing, adding that “the command would diligently prosecute the suspects in accordance with the law.”
