Police deploy in Olabisi Onabanjo University campuses

Ogun State Police Command has deployed officers to all campuses of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, as well as all strategic locations in the state. The command had earlier warned students to stay away from the institution premises located across the state and advised parents and guardians to caution their wards and children against any act of violence. At the entrances into the permanent site of the university in Ago-Iwoye, as well as other campuses located across the state, were many armed police officers. Similarly, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital, police officers were drafted to strategic locations, as well as all entry points into the town. Notable locations include; Presidential Boulevard which stretches down to the governor’s office, Kuto roundabout, NNPC junction, Ibara roundabout among others. A Non-Governmental Organisation,
Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Ogun State Branch, described the decision to close the university as announced by the state government as an unholy decision. The committee in a statement issued by its Chairman, Folarin Olayinka, condemned the decision to shut down the institution following the students’ agitation for a fee reduction. The body stated that the government action is a “demonstration of weakness, unworthiness of trust, failure on Educational promises and lack of Know How approach to salient matters that affects the future generation and Students community. “It will be recalled that the State Governor promised the Students a solution within one week after the two days mass protest to Abeokuta the State Capital by over two thousand students from the Institution. It took the giant stride of the CDHR Ogun State, Commissioner of Police and the Director of State Security Service to control the situation after several hours of dialogue,” the CDHR said in the statement. The CDHR called for the immediate sack of the Ogun State Commissioner of Education, Segun Odubela, saying he lacked the moral and pedigree to remain on seat. The organisation also asked that the Nigerian Police and other Security Operatives in the State be warned against any unlawful act, Military actions ,unlawful arrest ,unlawful detention and violation of constitutional rights of any student in Ogun state.
