Mrs Fawehinmi made the call in Lagos, at a press briefing organised by the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GAFAMORG) to announce activities marking the fifth anniversary of the lawyer’s death. She said “the apparent helpless-ness of the president in the face of continuous bombing and the kidnap of school girls in Borno are enough to demand his resignation”.
“Look at the case of Chibok girls who were kidnapped; if they were the president’s daughters, wouldn’t he have acted? Look at how he acted when a relative of his in-law was kidnapped? He swung into action immediately and the person was found. If the president can do that, it means he is not working for Nigerians but himself. So, if he cannot stop the insurgency, he should resign and allow someone who can do it to take over,” she said.
Mrs Fawehinmi also regretted what she called the failure of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to support her husband while leading advocacy to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of former publisher of Newswatch Magazine, late Dele Giwa, who was killed by a letter bomb. She recalled that her husband’s stance at that time was that knowing the true reason for Giwa’s death would prevent a reoccurrence.
“Look at us today in Nigeria; a week can barely pass without reports of bomb blasts in the country. If Gani had been supported back then, maybe Nigeria won’t have been where it is today,” she added.
She urged Nigerians to rise up and act, adding that there is no better time to demand good governance than now.
