Kinsmen of President Goodluck Jonathan, under the aegis of the Ijaw National Congress, have asked him to immediately declare for his re-election in the 2015 general election to silence the opposition. They threatened to “resist any attempt by Northern Elders Forum, to intimidate the President from seeking re-election next year.”According to them, the delay in declaring for re-election is giving impetus to some groups to issue unwarranted threats on the President and irrelevant conditions under which he could re-contest.Jonathan’s kinsmen threw the challenge in reaction to the condition given by NEF that the President should ensure the release of the abducted Chibok girls by October or forfeit seeking re-election in 2015.
The President of the INC, Mr. Charles Ambaiowei, made the demand during the inauguration of the newly elected executive council of Abuja chapter of the congress.
He said, “The INC violently disagrees with the position of NEF and further believes that their position can neither fall the heavens nor bring down the Nigerian roof over our heads in this democratic dispensation.
“The congress hereby strongly urges President Goodluck Jonathan to declare now and immediately contest for the 2015 presidential election because delay in this regard is giving underserved impetus to groups like, the Northern Elders Forum who declared that in case of the non-release of the Chibok girls by October, the President forfeits any option of re-contesting.”
