WITCHCRAFT: Father Sets 11-year-old Son Ablaze In A/Ibom

Justice may be on the way for an 11-year-old boy, Master Nmeyene Christopher Eyo, a pupil of Qua Ibo Church Primary School, Ikot Ekpri Atan Akpan in Nsit Ibium local government area of Akwa Ibom, who allegedly escaped death in the hand of his father, Mr Christopher Amos Essie, and Prophetess Amos Jonson, of the Light of God’s Grace Church Okon Eket..

Nmeyene’s father was said to have conspired with his wife to kill the boy by setting him ablaze, purporting to be delivering him from witchcraft.

Narrating his ordeal, the victim, Master Nmeyene explained that his problems with his parents started when he woke up one morning and told his maternal grandmother how he saw himself in the midst of people who gave him biscuits to eat, and she alerted his father who immediately came to the conclusion that the boy was a member of the witchcraft world and should therefore be dealt with before he wreaks havoc on the entire family.

He said that his parents meted several punishments on him in their quest to exorcize him of witchcraft spirit before his mother, Prophetess Amos, took him to the church, poured kerosene on him and set him ablaze.

He explained that he would have died instantly but for the timely intervention of his younger brother, Samuel Christopher, who quickly raised the alarm that attracted the people of the area, who subsequently called the police.

Commenting on the dastardly act, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Glory Emmanuel Edet, lamented the treatment meted out to the innocent boy, warning parents to desist from stigmatizing their children as witches and wizards.

Children, according to her, are precious gift from God, adding that they should be cared for, shown love and affection and guided until adulthood.
