The immediate past governor of Imo State, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, has appealed to governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to eschew rancour and mudslinging in their bid for the office.
Ohakim, himself a governorship aspirant in the 2015 general election, decried a situation where some aspirants had resorted to running down their fellow aspirants in a bid to enhance their own chances.
In a press statement made available to Daily Sun yesterday, the former governor argued that such a trend was an indirect way of de-marketing the party before the electorate.
Ohakim also argued that aspirants, who sponsored falsehood against their fellow aspirants, were indirectly lowering the esteem of the party as a whole. He said contest for party tickets was supposed to be seen as one between people of like minds and others should embrace whoever emerged as winner.Ohakim, himself a governorship aspirant in the 2015 general election, decried a situation where some aspirants had resorted to running down their fellow aspirants in a bid to enhance their own chances.
In a press statement made available to Daily Sun yesterday, the former governor argued that such a trend was an indirect way of de-marketing the party before the electorate.
He pointed out that the policy of the president and the national leadership of the party on the conduct of primaries encouraged rancour-free pursuit of party tickets and advised his fellow aspirants to take advantage of that instead of embarking on destructive campaigns.
The former governor said even though he was in the race with some aspirants, who served under him when he was governor, he acknowledged that they had every right to aspire.
While pledging his readiness to make concessions if the need arose, Ohakim pointed out that he had not gone against any rule by deciding to run for the office again.
He, however, expressed optimism that the PDP would win the governorship election in the state and indeed all other seats in the 2015 general elections.
He enjoined the party faithful to remain steadfast in their support for the party, noting that the current administration in the state had brought so much hardship to the people. He assured that a PDP administration in the state would return it to the path of honour and economic prosperity.
